I got my proof for Contagious yesterday. I cannot express how awesome it is to hold my own book in my hands! And being able to take a real copy of it around with me! :) I'm hard at work on the second book, Deathly Contagious right now. I really can't say enough good things about this trilogy. And yes, of course I would say good things because I'm the author, but really, they are just good books. I love my characters, love their interactions and development and the way the plot twists.

But my favorite thing is Orissa. For those that haven't read the book, Orissa is the main character. Basically, she's a bad ass. I'm so sick of books/movies/whatever with weak girls who depend on a guy and can't function without him. And I hate how creepy, stalker-ish, borderline personality disorder traits are turned romantic. Breaking or sneaking in to watch someone sleep-how is that NOT psychotic? Breaking a car so the girl is forced to stay and 'hang out' with the step away from a Criminal Minds episode. And don't even get me started on guys who freak out, scream, yell and break things when the girl decides she wants to leave. That is NOT romantic. That is aggressive, possessive behavior and is NOT healthy!

And no, I'm not thinking of just one book, I've read many others. We are in the day and age where females are trying to be seen as equals. We push that females and do anything and everything a male does. And then we get bestsellers where the girl is happy that she is 'at least pretty' because that's all she needs to get the guy she likes.

What about aspirations? What about dreams, college, a job, wanting to make something of yourself? It annoys the crap out of me. So, back to the original topic of this post: Orissa.

Orissa is very flawed. She is the most flawed character I've ever created, and I love her for it. We are flawed. (Another pet peeve of mine is perfect MCs...we are so not like that in real life.) Despite her flaws, Orissa doesn't let anything stop her. She doesn't give up. She doesn't sit back like a helpless damsel and let a guy do it. And, when facing zombies, it would be easier just to let someone else take care of things.  But she's a fighter, she's strong, she opinionated, and, I'll admit, at times a bitch :)

BUT, she's not weak.

Now, I'm not saying it's bad to show emotions or anything like that. Holding everything in is just as bad. But I don't want girls, esp young girls, thinking their life isn't complete without a man in it. Who hasn't been hurt by love? It may leave you broken in pieces all over the floor, but you pick yourself back up and go on with life. You don't forget to live.

That's is why I like my MCs to be strong willed females who don't put up with shit from anyone. They aren't stone hearted but they are capable. And I hope every girl knows that she can be too.

...and getting off the soap box now, I will post a section from Deathly Contagious in the near future. I'm having a 'zombie party' at a local bar, where people can dress like zombies or characters from the book. I'm very excited about it! :)
